A child is a gift and comes from God innocent, pure, trusting and loving. At conception all he knows is God
Who is Love and Goodness. All he wants is to love and be loved.
The Abuse of this love, innocence and trust is the worst thing anyone could do to a child. If this abuse is
violent, physical or sexual, then it turns into a trauma. If the abuse is from an adult the child is helpless to fight
back. The only defence he has is to disassociate from the trauma. Children can't deal with terrible pain or the
emotions connected with a traumatic event. Everything changes for them. They feel afraid, confused,
betrayed. They blame themselves thinking that they must have done something wrong to deserve the trauma.
Most of the time they are told they caused the trauma, because the abuser wants to make the child feel
responsible for his sin.
The child now turns from being loving and trusting to being full of fear and even terror. He is afraid to face the
abuser. If it is a parent, the child is torn between fear and love. They do not know who to trust. They will
become quiet and introverted. They will do anything to stay away from the abuser. If the abuse is constant,
they will try to hide or perhaps want to run away. But where could they go? He is just a child. They feel
helpless and hopeless.
If the child survives and eventually grows into an adult, although the physical wounds have healed, they will still
have hidden wounds from every trauma they suffered. They will carry these wounds with them where ever
they go. The wounds will determine many of their life choices until they face the wound and let it heal.
